If you’re new to lifting, constructing your own power bag might seem like an impossible task. However, the process is actually quite simple, especially if you use a guide such as this one to help you through it. Constructing your own power bag will take some time and money, but the results will give you a versatile piece of equipment that will last you many years to come and help you lift massive amounts of weight over time. Just follow these steps, and you’ll be well on your way to constructing your own power bag!
Materials
For constructing your own power bag, you’ll need an air pump, a piece of PVC pipe, a small plastic bag (like what some vegetables come in), and some water. You’ll also need a pair of pantyhose—but if you don’t have any laying around, you can get away with using athletic socks. Finally, one last thing to note before we begin: This project is more fun when you have friends to help! If possible, ask them to join in! It makes for great bonding time! Now that that’s out of the way, let’s move on to how you can construct your very own power bag.
For each person who wants to participate in making their own power bag, take about 3 feet of PVC pipe and cut it into sections about 4 inches long each. The exact size doesn't matter too much as long as they're all similar lengths. After that's done, wrap them all together with duct tape so they form a large circle. Then connect two ends together so it forms a complete circle.
Steps
1. Purchase a big, sturdy bag (the bigger, the better)
2. Fill it with sand, rocks or water to get it to weigh approximately 40 pounds
3. To increase your shoulder stability, hook one foot behind you and push your hips out as you lift it
4. Turn around and walk 10 paces; turn around
5. Grab your heels while straightening your back
6. Walk 30 feet; turn around
7. Lift your elbows high as you step forward
8. Repeat 5–10 times every day
9. Hold outstretched arms parallel to floor
10 (Optional). Add a weight vest
Tips & Tricks
When building your power bag, there are a few things to keep in mind. You don’t need to spend a lot of money or go overboard with multiple pieces of equipment. In fact, I prefer using a simple gym bag over any fancy bag. My advice is to start small with just 2-3 pieces of equipment that you enjoy (it’s best to have one piece for upper body, one for lower body, and one for core). You can add on as you see fit later on. If you have access to them, find some heavier weights (5-10 lbs) rather than using smaller dumbbells or barbells; it will make your workout more challenging and effective!
Where To Find Supplies
These days, virtually anything can be purchased on Amazon—and that includes gym equipment. Search for a variety of products, including skipping ropes and resistance bands, to find what you need for your power bag for a discounted price. Prices range from about $10-$50 per product. You can also go to your local sporting goods store and purchase items in person, but expect higher prices if you do so. Most stores sell empty duffel bags, too. As far as jump ropes are concerned, it’s possible to find these at dollar stores or even at places like Target or Walmart (but don’t expect high-quality). With that said, if you have any friends who are fitness enthusiasts or people who work out regularly, ask them for their old rope! Chances are they won’t mind giving it away since they probably have more than one and it may just end up sitting around unused anyway. When searching online or at a physical location for supplies, try shopping around to see which brand offers the best quality and price point.
